Review: The Lodge, Mallorca
The Lodge Mallorca review – in a sentence:
Much-coveted, and beautifully designed, luxury hotel based in a prime position for exploring the northern part of Mallorca.
Design: 4/5
The Lodge Mallorca is a very typical (and well-executed) example of a tried-and-tested formula: the Mallorcan farmhouse that's been converted into a luxury hotel.
It's a Unico Hotels property, the brand that operates some of the pre-eminent properties on the island – including the much-loved Finca Serena. So, safe to say, they know what they're doing!
The restoration has been very sensitively done, here, and modern elements (boucle club chairs; mid-century dining chairs; woven rattan rugs) blend effortlessly with the ancient bones of the building.
The Tramuntana mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for my personal highlight: the infinity pool, surrounded by those now-iconic terracotta coloured parasols.
Worthy of a White Lotus season, I’d say!
Food & drink: 3/5
Singular is the hotel's famed restaurant, led by Ramón Freixa, the chef who has earned two Michelin stars elsewhere. So, suffice it to say: it's a pretty high-end menu (with prices to match).
I'll be honest, while I enjoyed the meals we had, I did think they were on the extremely pricey side. It's also a shame that a property of this size and position in the market only has one restaurant.
That said, the views as you dine on the terrace overlooking the pool and the Tramuntana mountains are pretty stunning.
Location: 4/5
The Lodge sits in a private nature reserve in Sa Pobla, super close to Pollença, the Formentor coast and the Tramuntana mountains, so is a fantastic base for exploring the northern part of Mallorca in particular.
If you're coming from Palma airport, the journey is about 35 minutes by car, and – as I've mentioned in all of my Mallorca blog posts – I'd really recommend hiring a car for any Mallorca trip because it opens up the best places to explore, most of which aren't easily accessible by car.
But if that's not an option, then nearby Sa Pobla does have a train station.
To-do: 4/5
The grounds at The Lodge are extensive and there's a wide range of amenities on offer, from a picnic in the on-site lavender field, to complimentary yoga sessions. Also worthy of note is that there are plenty of cycle trails on-site and beyond – this part of Mallorca is a region for cycle fanatics, after all, being right near the Cap Formentor!
There are also plenty of places of note near the hotel. My favourites were:
Sa Pobla – small and in some ways unremarkable, but we loved popping into the local bakeries to grab a proper ensaïmada and a coffee to enjoy while we sat in the town square people watching
Llubí – a teeny but significant foodie hub, home to what became my favourite restaurant of the trip, Brut
Pollença – less picturesque than some of the smaller towns, but makes up for it with a good shopping and restaurant scene
Overall reasons to book The Lodge, Mallorca:
Super luxurious experience
Beautiful design and setting
Prime location to explore the north of the island
Any negatives?
Dining options should be more varied, for my tastes
I won't sugar coat it: room rates and amenities are seriously eye-watering. I could only really afford to stay here thanks to a generous birthday Mr & Mrs Smith voucher
