Review: Son Foguero
Son Foguero review – in a sentence:
Indulge in true disconnection at this beautiful, health & wellness-focused boutique hotel in the heart of the Mallorca countryside.
Design: 4/5
Is this Mallorca, or Tulum….?! The interior design scheme at Son Foguero goes heavy on the neutral linens, fringed rattan, and natural materials (think lots of untreated wood and stone), so you'd definitely be forgiven for thinking it's the latter. The effect is relaxed, bohemian, and earthy – and I'm here for it!
If Can Ferrereta – where I stayed on the next leg of my trip – is the chic, sophisticated older lady, Son Foguero is the youthful, hippy teenager. Comparing the two is such an interesting study in how properties of similar sizes and architectural "bones" can feel so incredibly different due to the design scheme.
Although Son Foguero is a converted farmhouse, the bedrooms are actually really large for the price, and while all twelve are individually designed, most are bedecked in trailing bougainvillea outside their French windows. I bloody love me some bougainvillea!
On the topic of flora and fauna, the grounds are also beautiful, in keeping with the fact that the hotel is marketed as being very much integrated with nature. The pool is probably the star of the show, taking pride of place in the centre of the property.
Food & drink: 3/5
The property's emphasis on wellness comes through strongly in the menus – the options are super healthy, which to be honest I found pretty welcome after a diet of mostly meat and beige / fried objects in the preceding days in Palma… However, if you're after more traditionally Mallorquín cuisine, this might not be the option for you. (Son Foguero very clearly markets itself as having a health-oriented menu (in fact, it calls itself a "health hotel"), so hopefully no surprises there.)
Breakfast was the highlight of the dining offering, for sure, featuring a super fresh, high quality, multi-course experience.
In keeping with the tranquil and serene vibe of the hotel, we regularly opted to sit out on the terrace for our meals to enjoy uninterrupted views of the rolling hills making up the Mallorca countryside, which was completely idyllic.
One niggle I would raise is that unfortunately the a la carte menu is casual, quite brief, and is repeated for lunch and dinner, so I did find myself struggling for options by the end of our stay. It would be great to see them expand the dining options so that some less casual and more varied options are available, particularly for evening meals!
If you're in need of a good local restaurant recommendation, I can suggest Restaurant Molí den Pau, a bit of a Mallorca institution which attracts diners from all over the island.
Location: 4/5
Son Foguero is based in the heart of the island, and provides a really central base for exploring everything Mallorca has to offer.
Being this deep in the countryside really appealed to me as it means you can totally disconnect and switch off.
Sineu is the nearby town, which has its own rail station for trains from Palma. Otherwise, Son Foguero is about a 40 minute drive from Palma, and I would highly recommend you grab a hire car on arrival at Palma so that you can explore the island. Many places aren't easily accessible by train.
To-do: 3/5
R&R is definitely the order of the day here, so beyond lazing around the finca and partaking in yoga, there's not a big list of bells and whistles at Son Foguero. Notably, there's no spa.
The lack of facilities didn't matter to me, mostly because we wanted to spend one day of our stay relaxing by the pool and the other hitting the beaches towards the east of the island, but also because you can't expect outstanding facilities for this price point in Mallorca.
But if you're looking for a little more in the way of on-site amenities, you might be better placed somewhere else.
Reasons to book:
Utterly tranquil base for some R&R
Central location on the island, great for exploring
Adults only, if that's your kinda thing (it is mine!)
(Comparatively) affordable.. Mallorca hotel prices are insane!
Any negatives?
As mentioned above, given the food menu isn't extensive and is used for both lunch and dinner, it did get a bit repetitive for my tastes.
