Review: Soho House Amsterdam
Soho House Amsterdam – in a sentence
A super convenient and gorgeous-looking base for your Amsterdam trip, but head elsewhere for food!
Design: 4/5
Soho House Amsterdam occupies a distinctive 1930s building called the Bungehuis, and the beautiful, original Art Deco architectural features remain intact.
This influence has very much been carried through to the interiors – so expect stained glass windows, jewel-toned furnishings, and some seriously stunning parquet flooring.
(My only slight gripe is that the common areas in the hotel have quite a dark feel, but I totally get that this is due to the architecture, and I do think the stunning design features make up for that!)
I booked a "Small" room category and was so pleasantly surprised by how roomy it felt, with its own little seating area and views over the canal.
I’d really recommend you plump for a room with canal views, if you can - a major selling point of this property!
There was a super-king bed, as is standard for Soho House, with a really gorgeous bespoke headboard (complete with tiny tulips – so cute!) and the usual dreamy little bathroom set up, complete with all the extensive amenities you can normally expect.
I was really pleased with the room for the price, and it was the perfect base for my stay. There wasn't anything I'd change to be honest!
Food & drink: 3/5
There's a Cecconi's on the ground floor and upstairs, the House Kitchen serves the standard Soho House fare.
While it’s nice that you can expect your go-to options from home to be available, I was surprised to see a lack of local cuisine on the menu (bitterballen was the only item I spotted).
Soho House are normally pretty good at integrating some of their most popular dishes into a menu that's, overall, in keeping with the region (Little Beach House Barcelona is a great example). So, I was a bit disappointed not to be able to grab some classic Dutch dishes.
I also didn't sample breakfast, here – I was too busy café hopping to soak in as much of Amsterdam's café culture as possible! So although I was a bit underwhelmed by the offering, that may be unfair of me as Soho House usually shines at breakfast menus… And in a city with such an incredible food scene, they are probably aware that you'll likely dine out, anyway. (Calisto is my top recommendation for dinner, by the way!)
Location: 5/5
Like most Soho House properties, a prime location has been utterly prioritised, here.
Soho House Amsterdam is situated on Spuistraat, which is right in the heart of the centre (on the edge of the Nine Streets shopping district) and walking distance to many of the key sights.
You'll likely arrive into Amsterdam Centraal from the airport (or Eurostar), which is only a 10-15 minute walk away. If you'd prefer to get the tram / metro, Rokin station is a few minutes' walk away.
So overall, super easy and convenient!
To-do: 4/5
Although the facilities look extensive, I didn't really get to experience the most of them myself as I didn't have time to use the spa, and the weather was awful so I couldn't admire the views from the rooftop (but it looks pretty spectacular up there).
I did, however, peek at the gym (don't worry – I've not had a total personality transplant and become someone who trains while on holiday – I just popped in to change before my flight home!) and was seriously impressed. It's huge, very modern, and even contains a climbing wall.
Overall reasons to book Soho House Amsterdam:
Perfect location – super central, walkable to many of the sights
Option for great canal views (just double check and book an appropriate room category)
Gorgeous Art Deco-inspired design
A fantastic gym!
All very relative, but, when I was researching this trip I found Amsterdam hotels to be suuuuper expensive these days. So was pleasantly surprised at the cost of this option
Any negatives?
As above, it would be great to see the food and bev offering updated to serve some more local fare!
