Can Ferrereta review – in a sentence

Much coveted, ultra-luxurious boutique hotel in one of the best parts of Mallorca.

Design: 5/5

What was once a farmhouse in a rural part of Mallorca has been transformed into what’s essentially a very chic townhouse with a vast extension.

You can tell that great care has been taken to retain as much of the original structure as possible (including lots of beautiful stone floors), and this is definitely needed (in my very humble opinion!) to contrast with the modern, minimal design scheme.

Though the schemes are all in neutral tones, there's nothing boring or sterile about this property – somehow they've managed the perfect blend of old mixed with new, of rusticity mixed with sophistication, and of simplicity mixed with boldness. Art plays a big part in this, I think, and comes from the owner's vast collection.

It's a really gorgeous hotel and I think this might now actually be one of my top 3 faves, ever, when it comes to design.

Food & drink: 4/5

You MUST request a dinner reservation outside on the hotel's terrace during your stay, which is definitely the dreamiest way to experience the excellent on-site restaurant, Ocre. This is exactly what we did to celebrate my birthday, and it was so special :) (but don't worry, the indoor dining room is also gorgeous if the weather doesn't play ball).

In addition to Ocre, you can grab a more casual bite at La Fresca, the poolside restaurant, which is also a lovely spot for some pre-dinner sundowners with a snack – one of my favourite past times, tbh…

Finally, breakfast is included and is a super generous and luxurious affair, with a strong a la carte offering of hot options (we loved the omelettes) backed up by a really high-quality, continental spread you can help yourselves to. Bonus points for the hotel offering its own ensaïmada – these are powdered, sweet, flaky pastries which are a Mallorquín specialty (and absolutely delish).

Location: 5/5

Can Ferrereta sits in the heart of Santanyí, a small, historic market town that's become a prime destination to experience the slower side of Mallorca. There's a slew of lifestyle shops, cafes and clothing boutiques lining the narrow, cobbled streets and attracting a low key – but glamorous – crowd.

I'm sure the opening of Can Ferrereta has had a lot to do with Santanyí's popularity, but I think it's also massively helped by its position in the south-east of the island, close to many of Mallorca's best sandy beaches (Mondragó Natural Park and Cala Llombards were two of my faves). It's an excellent base for exploring the best that the eastern side of the island has to offer.

Transport wise, you're only about a 45 min drive from the airport (and you'll definitely need a car if you want to make the most of your Mallorca trip).

To-do: 3/5

R&R is the order of the day here, so the amenities very much focus on wellbeing and relaxation, and the hotel is the perfect retreat after your jaunts across the island.

The saltwater pool is the hub and is surrounded by olive trees and bougainvillea-lined walls and it honestly SUCH a dreamy, relaxing spot.

But we must talk about (for me) the star of the show: the iconic indoor pool / hammam / spa…

I spent yonks just sat there, entranced, watching the light dance around the space. So beautiful!

Reasons to book:

  •  Most agree that this is one of the best hotels on Mallorca, if not the best

  • Completely gorgeous and relaxing property

  • Excellent foodie offering

  • Perfect location for exploring some of Mallorca's best beaches

Any negatives?

  • This is very niche, but… For such a luxury property, I was surprised by a bit of an underwhelming entrance! (When you arrive at the hotel you'll see it's on a very narrow, unassuming street.)

  • Unfortunately, we weren't invited to book parking beforehand (I think this was a glitch, by virtue of having booked through a travel agent) and the hotel's parking was full when we arrived, so we had to make do with public parking which was a bit inconvenient (and not inexpensive).
